Extraordinary theatre in unexpected places

In this current crisis, Fireraisers wanted to create an event to bring the people of our hometown, Lewes, together whilst apart. So

Light Up Lewes!

May 6th, 9pm, co-ordinated by Fireraisers Theatre Company, supported by Farnham Maltings.

For one night only, Lewesians will come together whilst apart, lighting up their balconies and windows, and joining their voices to sing Sussex’s unofficial anthem: Sussex by the Sea - led by notable locals. Celebrating the resilience and joie de vivre of Lewes, it will be filmed for a wider audience.

*What we’re asking people to do: At 9 o’clock on 6th May, light up their homes, come to their windows or doorways and sing Sussex by the Sea. Simple. (click this link so you can practice! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4Py0xEkMp8&t=1s )

Sussex By The Sea

First Verse

    Now is the time for marching,

        Now let your hearts be gay,

    Hark to the merry bugles

        Sounding along our way.

    So let your voices ring, my boys,

        And take the time from me,

    And I’ll sing you a song as we march along,

        Of Sussex by the Sea!

            For we're the men from Sussex, Sussex by the Sea.

            We plough and sow and reap and mow,

            And useful men are we;

            And when you go to Sussex, whoever you may be,

            You may tell them all that we stand or fall

            For Sussex by the Sea!

    Oh Sussex, Sussex by the Sea!

    Good old Sussex by the Sea!

    You may tell them all we stand or fall,

    For Sussex by the Sea.

Second Verse

    Sometimes your feet are weary,

        Sometimes the way is long,

    Sometimes the day is dreary,

        Sometimes the world goes wrong;

    But if you let your voices ring,

        Your care will fly away,

    So we'll sing a song as we march along,

        Of Sussex by the Sea.

Chorus and Refrain

Third Verse

    Up in the morning early,

        Start at the break of day;

    March till the evening shadows

        Tell us it's time to stay.

    We're always moving on, my boys,

        So take the time from me,

    And sing this song as we march along,

        Of Sussex by the Sea.

Chorus and Refrain

We care about our community, both locally and around the country and our message is simple: stay home, save lives.

 We’re all doing our bit, pledging not to put any more strain on our already stretched front line services by observing social distancing measures. Light Up Lewes! will be no different. In format, it will be much like Clap For The NHS: everyone will take part from the safety of their own home, together whilst apart.  It’s intended to be a celebration of community and a moment of shared joy in these dark times – without anyone needing to leave their property.
